Andy Boynton’s Book The Idea Hunter Helps You Cultivate and Organize Great Ideas

I love reading and pride myself on reading a book each week. I love everything – historical narratives, thrillers, mysteries, cookbooks and self-help books on everything from parenting, art and writing. Until now I've not genuinely enjoyed any books directed at the business market. That was until I read The Idea HunterHow to find the best ideas and make them happen written by Boston College of Management Dean, Professor Andy Boynton and Prof. Bill Fischer.

I loved The Idea Hunter.  Its premise is that ideas are everywhere and that managers can find these ideas not just by surrounding oneself with creative types. “Our book blows away the myth that the only great ideas are original ones,” Boynton writes. “Often great ideas are simply improvising upon something that is already created."

To illustrate, the authors cite dozens of ideas that helped found iconic American companies such as Wal-Mart, Disney Incorporated and Ford. Reviewers have written that the book encourages those who do not feel that they are a genius. Often the cleverest people in an organization stick to their success formula and therefore do not hunt for better ideas. The less clever people are interested enough to seek new ideas.

For this writer, The Idea Hunter was a real game changer. Because of The Idea Hunter, I now sell myself the best hour of every day to learn something new. This is either through reading or by chatting with people whom I mightn't normally encounter.

The Idea Hunter inspired me to buy a gorgeous quilted box in which to put clippings, handwritten notes and brochures — anything that might generate a news article, blog or children's storybook idea. I will review the box frequently, culling anything useless and acting upon the ideas I still like. Sometimes I might find that a notion isn’t an idea alone, but paired with another concept it’s a winning idea.

Meanwhile I am joining new social groups such as a foodie group and a group for expatriates working and living here in North Carolina.  If The Idea Hunter is accurate, all of this will help fuel and organize my constant ideas. As Boynton writes; “Ideas don't come to people like a bolt out of the blue. Ideas are all around us, just waiting to be discovered and noticed.”
