For techno-geeks like me, I took a short break out of my work day to watch the live-blog of Apple’s announcements for the iPhone’s new OS 4.0. To translate, Apple is upgrading the technology and capabilities of the iPhone to support some new and interesting capabilities.
1: Better Geo-Locating
The iPhone will be using local cell phone towers to pinpoint your location better. This ties into the ability to suggest nearby services and companies that may have what you’re looking for.
The practical application of this is easy to see. If I’m out with my friends and we’re looking for a place to eat, better geo-locating can suggest nearby restaurants, when I chip my tooth on some burnt tortilla chips, I can find a local emergency dentist and when that dentist pulls the wrong tooth, I can find a good lawyer. All of this is done with information that surrounds my current location on my mobile smart phone.
2: iAds
Consider the fact that ads on the iPhone get over 1 billion (raise pinky finger) impressions per day. You read this correctly, that’s a Billion (with a “B”) per day, every 24 hours.
Apple’s new iAd platform allows the marketer to build and distribute through a very targeted (even geographically) ads that use HTML 5. Again, let me translate for the “non tech-geek”. HTML 5 will allow videos and increased user interactivity for your users. It’s not Macromedia Flash, which can slow down the performance of mobile ads.
What does this all mean to you?
At VisionPoint Marketing, we take a tremendous amount of pride in being able to deliver strong local SEO results, targeted PPC campaigns and brilliantly researched and designed websites to our clients. What this will allow us to do for you is deliver your message to the right people at the right time, when they’re looking for what you have. When you consider the amount of iPhones you see in a single day, when you consider how many people are using the applications on their mobile phones, this is another way for you to reach more customers, get targeted and qualified leads and ultimately, drive more business.
While desktop search and advertising won’t diminish in the near term, mobile advertising can shorten the time between your customers’ recognition of a need and them contacting you.
