SCORE

I want to thank Jack Barto and the great group of folks at the local Raleigh Score chapter. I had a great opportunity to present at one of their well organized SCORE events this past weekend. SCORE develops educational programs for people starting or currently running a small business. My hour presentation was an overview of online marketing tools, focused on some of the pitfalls to avoid as well as best practices.

I always enjoy the Q&A after presenting as it provides a good insight on what this group felt was important to marketing their businesses and the obstacles they were encountering. Topics that came up revolved around purchasing email lists, stopping SPAM, and how to differentiatiing yourself in the marketplace where everyone is the same – sounds easy but the answer isn’t always so obvious – just ask a lawyer.

Another reason I like SCORE events is because it is a good reminder that everyone isn’t a tech geek. Caught up inthe fervor and excitement of the latest Google Lab experiment or the next upgrade of Firefox, it is easy to forget that everyone isn’t blogging (yet), everyone isn’t using RSS feeds (yet), and everyone has their own comfort level with how they use technology in their daily lives and in their business.

One of the reasons I love my job is I am always learning something new. The opportunity to pass that knowledge along to help others grow their business and reach new customers while in the process helping them achieve the sometimes elusive potential technology and the internet is always promising, is pretty sweet.
