Not only does the blog facilitate direct communication, but in allows you to weave your site and message into the fabric of the web.
Sure Google gives prominence to sites with strong inbound links but it also has a temporal aspect to its sorting. That is, it likes its content fresh. Additionally the syndication of content on your site allows you to penetrate sources like Technorati, appearing across subjects in keyword searches strictly organized by time.
