Twitter’s Blackbird Pie Can Drive Links & SEO

Date
May 04

Twitter's just launched Blackbird Pie. This cool service will allow you to take a unique Twitter URL and generate some very cool code to embed in your blog. One of the cool things about this is that if you're quoted via a Twitter source on another blog, your Twitter name will be linked to via a very clean, very SEO friendly link.

The obvious advantage to that is the fact that it will drive links to your Twitter page, which will, in turn drive traffic and interest to what you have to say. This can generate more followers, more interactions and more of that sweet ROI that social media marketing brings to you.

If you're concerned about your online reputation, think of the first page of Google as real estate. If your company's Twitter profile shows up on the front page for a branded search, you'll be able to control more of the top ten real estate, leaving less room for negative results.

One of the not so good parts to the service is that if you know a tiny bit of HTML, you'll be able to modify the generated code and put whatever you want in its place, giving the impression that you said something that you actually didn't say. Now, that would be immediately falsifiable by clicking on the link to the generated tweet, but sometimes the damage can be done if no follow up is done.

Dan London shows a good example of the Blackbird Pie in action.

It takes the picture, the Twitter username and a nice link right to the source.

Yep, that's I did to show how this kind of message can spread quickly

Now, you can see the edited version of the code to falsely attribute a  quote to someone. I'm sure that in the future, Twitter will make the content un-editable, but for now, with this embed feature, I can pretty much make anyone say anything and it looks official.

Despite the potential for abuse, this will be a great way to gain brand awareness, brand loyalty and get some much deserved links not just to your Twitter account, but to your business as a whole.
